Teletherapy | Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara may feel compact on a map, but a weekly therapy appointment can still take a sizeable chunk out of your day once you factor in the 101, parking, and the drive from Goleta, Montecito, Carpinteria, or elsewhere in the area.

Teletherapy in Santa Barbara gives you a way to keep mental health care consistent without adding travel or extra logistics to your week.

I’m Kavita Patil, MA, LMFT. My practice is based in Santa Barbara and is entirely online, offering therapy and psychotherapy to adults and couples throughout California. The setting is virtual, but the work itself remains personal: understanding your patterns, building emotional safety, and helping you move through whatever brought you to therapy in the first place.

What Is Online Therapy?

Online therapy, sometimes called virtual therapy or telehealth, means meeting with a licensed therapist through a secure video connection.

The conversation, therapeutic relationship, and focus of the work are much the same as they would be with in-person therapy. What changes is the format.

Virtual therapy can provide meaningful support for anxiety, self-esteem, stress, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and other mental health challenges. It isn’t a lesser version of care. For many clients, it’s simply a more realistic way to fit therapy into a full life.

As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist regulated by California’s Board of Behavioral Sciences, I’m always comfortable with clients verifying my license before we begin working together.

How Teletherapy Works

Sessions take place through a secure, private online platform.

I’ll send you a link ahead of time so you can join easily at our scheduled appointment from wherever you have privacy and a stable internet connection.

You don’t need special equipment or technical experience. A laptop, tablet, or phone with a camera is enough. If video isn’t an option on a particular day, phone sessions are also available.

What matters most is having a space where you can speak openly without worrying about being overheard or interrupted.

Many clients find that being in a familiar environment actually makes it easier to settle in and talk.

Why Santa Barbara Clients Choose Virtual Sessions

Even in Santa Barbara, getting to a fixed weekly appointment isn’t always simple.

Traffic on the 101, demanding work schedules, family responsibilities, and the distance between areas such as Goleta, Montecito, and Carpinteria can all make consistency harder than it needs to be.

Teletherapy removes much of that barrier.

You can meet with me from home, a private office, or another quiet space without losing additional time to travel. It’s also a practical option when a work deadline runs long, a child is home sick, you’re dealing with a minor illness, or another responsibility makes leaving home difficult.

For some clients, seeking therapy online is the only way regular sessions fit into their schedule. Others simply prefer online sessions because being in their own environment feels more comfortable.

Teletherapy can also help maintain continuity of care when you’re traveling elsewhere in California or your schedule changes temporarily.

Either way, the goal is the same: keeping support accessible rather than putting it on hold because the logistics become too difficult.

Support for Life Transitions and Everyday Challenges

You don't need to be in crisis to seek therapy.

You may be navigating anxiety, low self-esteem, a difficult life transition, recurring relationship problems, family dynamics, or simply a period when everything feels harder to carry than usual.

Therapy gives you a place to slow down, understand what's happening, and begin seeing patterns that may be difficult to recognize when you're caught in the middle of them.

I work with adults dealing with a range of mental health concerns, including stress, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, people-pleasing patterns, and the effects of earlier relationships on how you connect with others today.

Rather than offering quick fixes, my approach focuses on building insight and coping strategies that make sense for your particular life.

Many clients begin therapy feeling overwhelmed by one specific difficulty and gradually develop a clearer understanding of themselves, their relationships, and the choices available to them.

My-Therapeutic-Approach

My Approach to Therapy

My work is relational, attachment-focused, and trauma-informed.

That means we don’t look only at symptoms in isolation. We also pay attention to the relationships, experiences, and emotional patterns that may be contributing to what you’re feeling now.

Depending on your needs, our work may draw on:

  • Attachment-focused therapy, exploring how earlier relationships shaped the way you experience closeness, trust, conflict, and emotional safety
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), particularly in couples therapy, to identify the emotions beneath recurring conflict and strengthen communication and connection
  • Psychodynamic therapy, helping you understand how past experiences and less-conscious patterns may influence your present-day reactions
  • Trauma-informed care, approaching your history with sensitivity to emotional safety and pacing
  • Nervous system regulation, helping you recognize and respond differently when stress, anxiety, or overwhelm takes over

The goal is not to fit you into a predetermined treatment plan. It’s to understand your unique needs and create a therapeutic process that actually reflects them.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first appointment is primarily about getting to know each other.

I’ll ask what brought you to therapy, what has been happening in your life, and what you’re hoping will feel different. We’ll begin building a clearer picture together rather than expecting you to have everything figured out before you arrive.

Individual sessions are 50 minutes, and couples sessions are 60 minutes. All sessions take place online.

Virtual sessions carry the same professional privacy and confidentiality standards as in-person care. The platform I use is designed for secure healthcare communication, and I’ll ask that you find a private space on your end where you can talk freely.

For some people, starting therapy from a familiar environment also takes away some of the nervousness that can come with a first session.

If that’s true for you, online therapy can make the process of beginning feel a little easier.

Insurance Options

I don’t accept insurance directly.

If you’d like to seek reimbursement, I can provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network benefits.

Insurance coverage varies by plan, so I recommend contacting your insurer beforehand to understand your specific mental health benefits and what reimbursement may be available.

Who Teletherapy Is For

Teletherapy can work especially well if you:

  • Have a demanding or unpredictable schedule
  • Live in Goleta, Montecito, Carpinteria, or elsewhere in the Santa Barbara area and want to avoid extra travel
  • Are managing family or caregiving responsibilities
  • Have an illness, mobility limitation, or other circumstance that makes travel difficult
  • Prefer online sessions from a familiar, private environment
  • Travel within California and want more continuity in your care

Teletherapy isn’t the right fit for every situation.

If you’re experiencing an immediate mental health crisis or need a higher level of treatment than outpatient therapy can provide, online therapy alone may not be appropriate.

My practice is fully online, so I don’t currently offer in-person therapy sessions in Santa Barbara.

Free Consultation

If you’re interested in seeing whether this approach feels like a good fit, I offer a free 15-minute consultation.

It’s a low-pressure way to tell me a little about what you’re looking for, ask questions about online therapy, and get a sense of whether working together feels right before scheduling your first session.
